TIP Frees a 23-Year-Old- Female who gave Birth at Kirikiri Female Correctional Center

Through its access to justice, TIP offered pro bono to a 23-year-old final-year student at a prestigious Nigerian university, who was charged with fraud and remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Center. Miss D was heavily pregnant at the time of her arrest and gave birth to a baby while in custody. Despite being granted bail, she could not meet the bail conditions and spent nine months in custody with her baby.

TIP offered her pro bono legal support for over seven months. Following the legal representation provided, she was discharged and reunited with her family. We are working to provide psychosocial support for her and encourage her parents to send her back to school to complete her final year, which was deferred due to her incarceration.

TIP is committed to promoting and protecting the rights of vulnerable and indigent women in custody through the provision of pro bono legal services. We believe that every individual, regardless of their circumstances, deserves access to legal representation and a fair trial. TIP will continue to support women and children through its access to justice and other programs.
