TIP Supports a Vulnerable Woman in Tenancy Matters in Lagos State

TIP took up a case involving a landlord and a tenant in a tenancy matter in court after witnessing an abusive landlord’s exploitation of a woman who had no legal representation. The landlord, who appeared in person in court, sought to evict the woman, claiming he had returned half of her rent in November 2022 and requested her to vacate the premises. The woman, a new mother facing financial difficulties, had her water and electricity disconnected by the landlord. The landlord verbally abused the defenseless defendant in court, causing her to break down in tears in the open court. TIP’s legal officer, who was in court for another matter witnessing this abuse, swiftly intervened, interviewed the woman, and entered her defense. Through a process of settlement, both parties agreed to the terms proposed by TIP, which were subsequently adopted as a consent judgment.

TIP remains committed to defending the rights of vulnerable and indigent women and girl.
